The IEEE SMC 13th Workshop on Brain-Machine Interface (BMI) Systems will be held from October 1-4, 2023 as part of SMC 2023 flagship annual conference of the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society. The Workshop provides a forum for scientists to present research results and facilitate the interaction and intellectual exchange between researchers, developers, and consumers of BMI technology. We invite contributions reporting the latest advances, innovations, and applications in BMIs. The BMI Workshop is organized by the IEEE SMC Technical Committee on Brain-Machine Interface Systems. Participation is free to all registered SMC 2023 attendees.

We invite contributions reporting the latest advances, innovations, and applications in all fields related to BMI, including new neuroimaging modalities and sensor technologies, interfaces, protocols, signal enhancement and multimodal fusion, integration of BMIs with virtual/augmented reality, affective BMI, hybrid BMI, deep learning for BMI, neurorehabilitation, serious gaming, and emerging applications. These topics offer tremendous opportunity for collaborative and multi-disciplinary research, involving not only peers with expertise in the field of BMI and other neurotechnologies and those with expertise in systems engineering, human-machine systems, cybernetics, neuroscience, robotics, and artificial intelligence. The four-day Workshop will feature a series of panels, a BR41N.IO brain-computer interface hackathon, prominent invited industry/academia speakers, and presented contributed papers and posters.

This is the eighth year that the IEEE SMC BMI Workshop will host a BR41N.IO Brain-Computer Interface Hackathon with several cash prizes. The BCI Hackathon is a brainstorming and collaborative marathon designed to rapidly produce fully functional BCI prototypes with team members spread worldwide. The Hackathon will be held on October 1-2, 2023. Participation is free for SMC 2023 attendees. Learn more about the IEEE SMC 2023 BCI Hackathon projects and teams, how to form/join one, and how to register at br41n.io/IEEE-SMC-2023.

BCI Award 2023

Make sure to submit your BCI project to the BCI Award 2023. You just need a 2-page description of your work and a short video showing your BCI research and projects. Submission deadline is 1st of September 2023. Further information can be found here: www.bci-award.com.

Author instructions

Full paper submissions: Authors that wish to have their papers appear in the conference proceedings and in IEEE Xplore, will need to submit their 4-6 page papers to the SMC 2023 conference using this link. Choose "Submit a Contribution to SMC 2023". Under the first submissions category, choose the "BMI Workshop Regular Papers”. Full papers will undergo peer-review by a minimum of three reviewers and will be subject to an acceptance rate to be determined by the general SMC 2023 chairs.

Full Special Session paper submissions: Authors that wish to have their special session papers appear in the conference proceedings and in IEEE Xplore, will need to submit their 4-6 page papers to the SMC 2023 conference using this link. Choose "Submit a Contribution to SMC 2023". Under the first submissions category, choose the "BMI Workshop Special Session Papers” and then choose one of the codes for your chosen special session. Full special session papers will undergo peer-review by a minimum of three reviewers and will be subject to an acceptance rate to be determined by the general SMC 2023 chairs.

Abstract submissions: 1-page abstracts can also be submitted. These will be reviewed by a technical program committee put together by the Workshop organizers. Accepted abstracts will not appear in the SMC 2023 proceedings and will not appear in IEEE Xplore, but they will be listed on the BMI Workshop website for diffusion. Accepted abstracts will be presented as posters during the Workshop. Abstracts should provide a title, authors list, technical content, and references within one page. To submit an abstract, authors should choose the “BMI Workshop Abstracts" option on the submission page.
